The history of the Jagannath Temple in Puri dates back to ancient times and is deeply rooted in Hindu tradition. The present temple was built in the 12th century by King Anantavarman Chodaganga Deva of the Eastern Ganga dynasty. It is believed that the worship of Lord Jagannath existed even before the temple was constructed, connected to tribal traditions of Odisha, especially the worship of a deity called Nilamadhava.
